This Really Might Be Happening (Week 2 Recap)

It's been a busy few days, but in all the best ways. I'm so grateful for all of those who have been helping us to see the dream of Spring of Life Church come to reality.  At this point, we've had 3 of our mission teams on the ground having conversations and building relationships with the people of Portland.  We've engaged with about 1,000 people.  Some people only want to talk for a minute, but a surprising number of people stop to engage in some truly meaningful conversations.  It's been so fulfilling to see lots of these people cross the threshold of the Regal Cinemas during our Sunday morning preview services.

I had really high hopes for this summer.  But I'm still kind of pinching myself.

Last night, I was preparing to preach on the subject of TRUTH.  I had a passage of scripture and a basic outline.  To be honest, I wasn't really happy with it.  I just didn't get the sense that I had really gotten to the heart of what God wanted me to say.

I was working in my office on Broadway.  I decided I needed to get out.  I put on headphones and pulled up my hood as I started a very familiar trek - to prayer walk around Director Park, Fox Tower, and the Guild Theater. My heart was encouraged and electrified as I walked.  There was something so refreshing about the raindrops hitting me in the face, and the sounds of Resurrecting by Elevation Worship.

"In your name I come alive
to declare your victory.
The resurrected King
is resurrecting me."

As I walked, I noticed how my faith has grown since my first night as a Portland resident. After we pulled up in the Uhaul on that overcast day in October 2015, I couldn't bring myself to spend the night in our new townhouse.  We rented a hotel for an extra day, just because I was struggling to process what we had actually done.  On my prayer walk this Saturday, I was really pressing into God.  He felt so very close and extraordinarily strong. I asked Him, from deep within my heart, to move in a powerful way.  As clearly as He has every spoken to my heart He said, "Aaron - I'm already moving."

That makes a lot of sense.  God has been moving for years.  It didn't start with us, but we get to play a small part.  We can't take credit for anything that's happening - it's really falling into our lap.  The only thing we've done is say "yes" and then beg Him for stuff.  He has done the rest.

We have a long way to go, but images are powerful.  This summer is about seeing a glimpse of what we've been dreaming. I love it, but I can't wait to see more.  Pray for us.  We've got some really exciting follow-up one-on-one's this week.  This is where the ongoing invitation to discipleship happens. This is what it's really all about.

Aaron is the pastor of Spring of Life, a new church in Portland, Oregon. He's the owner of Amplify Creative.
