Serving with Church of the City in Downtown Portland

Serving as a NAMB apprentice this year, a huge part of my job is connecting with local churches to study how the kingdom of God is already breaking through.

This week we went to 6 awesome churches (4 weekend services and 2 weekly bible studies). One of my favorites was CHURCH OF THE CITY with my friend Russell Clum. Today’s Sunday service was cancelled so we could team up and take coffee, socks, scarves, and breakfast to the homeless community around the city.

I got to speak with several men as I helped serve coffee, and I got to pray with one. I also got to speak to a guy named Bubbles who just needed someone to listen. He went on for several minutes, telling shocking tales, and then enthusiastically showed me a “trick” with a lighter. Luckily, it didn’t quite hit me in the face as it bounced rather effectively off of the sidewalk. All that aside, I was reminded how easy it is to live like Jesus. Sometimes the only thing it takes to show someone love and dignity is a little eye contact.

I love what God is doing in Portland and I’m so humbled to be a part of it. It’s like being on a mission trip that I would hate to leaveand realizing we don’t have to. I’m so grateful to everyone who is helping us to be here. Let His kingdom come.
